This year Peacock & Co Solicitors celebrates its 30th anniversary and in 2017 we opened our second office in Epsom. Being part of our community is important to us. Along with acting for residents and businesses, we aim to support local initiatives, events, associations and charities. We are proud to support Epsom & Ewell Foodbank, part of the Trussell Trust, as our nominated charity for 2021.

The past year has had a dramatic impact upon loss of earnings and food insecurity in our community. In little under the ten years since the Epsom & Ewell Foodbank opened its doors, in October 2012, its need has sadly not diminished. In 2020, 12,500 three-day emergency food supplies were given to local people in crisis, struggling to feed themselves and their families.

The Foodbank provides not only food and toiletries to those in need, but also a listening ear and invaluable personal support. With the help of a qualified counsellor, Gillian Thompson, the Epsom & Ewell Foodbank is uniquely able to extend support to clients suffering with their mental health, in a safe environment. Many who experience food insecurity can be vulnerable to, or already suffering, depression, anxiety, or low self-esteem, affecting their ability to cope or reach out for help.

In addition, clients may have experienced long-term domestic abuse or post-traumatic stress disorder, or be suffering directly as a result of the pandemic from lockdown-induced agoraphobia or anxiety.  Regular counselling to these clients is a key building-block to breaking the cycle of need. While the causes of food insecurity are manifold, the aim of the Foodbank is exactly this: empowering clients to help themselves improve their situation. Ultimately, as Jonathan Lees, who heads up the Epsom & Ewell Foodbank, describes, ‘for the Foodbank to no longer be needed.’

After devastating year for many and a difficult time for all, we would love to share some joy this Easter. Please drop your gifts with us weekdays, 9am-5.30pm until close of business on Wednesday 24th March.

Over the coming year, we are looking forward to hosting a fundraising event in the autumn and, towards the end of the year, offering Fees for Food – will writing from our Private Client team in exchange for donations.  You can donate at any time here – we are so grateful for your support.
